Choosing the Best Acting Class for You

Many years earlier, an ad captured my eye in the NYC Village Voice and made my heart leap. We have far more acting classes, acting studios and acting methods accessible than I had before I started, taking everything into the current. And though the range is far wider and there are more study modes open, the approach to select is the same; it is to believe in what captivates you, sounds right, captures you, talks to you, lights you up.

When the great Russian director and teacher Konstantin Stanislavsky created the system that was to become Method Acting in the early 1900s, he took acting to a completely new dimension.

Prior to this, Representational Acting was practised, as how to mimic and master those physical and verbal skills.

Sanford Meisner, who revised the prevalent approaches of his repetition drills, task usage, and exercise usage during the first year of a two-year programme, was another great influence.

And then I created my acting method, concentrating on each actor’s uniqueness; creating their True Selves, identifying their Own Signature, digging into their Emotional Body so that they function naturally and truthfully at the moment and utilising themselves as the foundation from which to turn into character. It is also simpler to perform the moments of the storey, having already turned into the role. The technique is very behavioural; the presence of the actor is felt. We finally add conditions, through-line, intent, the arc, time lines, and what you’re revealing. It is a method which works for all media.

Schools / Studios of Acting:

Many of the Acting Studios, including the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, teach a two-year curriculum. The Strasberg Institute, like Stella Adler ‘s academy, is still open. Studios, including Sande Shurin Acting Workshop, where my husband Bruce Levy and I teach my Acting Technique,’ Transformational Acting,’ better known as the Shoran Technique, seem to be all about continuing growth and technique. It is here that I build actors for film, stage, TV in the classroom and private tutor several famous actors. Working on scripts that the performers are auditioning for and/or recruited for is part of our class practise.
